Mustang Creek Golf Course

Taylor Texas

100th Centennial Anniversary

100 years ago.... business men from the railroad and cotton town of Taylor Texas, stood on the rolling hills south of the Mustang Creek and decided that the wind swept hills looked like the Scottish Highlands where the game of golf was becoming popular as a sport and as a business. There, on those hills south of Taylor land was bought in 1914 to create the first golf course in Williamson County and the 14th golf course in Texas. Mustang Creek is second only to Hancock Golf Course in downtown Austin as the oldest golf courses in all of central Texas.

In late 1914, the course was laid out and the first "greens" were made of oiled and rolled sand greens. Then in 1924, the course was redesigned with bermuda grass greens. This "new" golf course layout and design was in conjunction with the opening of the new Taylor Country Club's Club House. In the late 1950's the golf course was part of a test of the new Tifgreen bermuda hybrid grass that was planted in a new putting green and on the original hole # 8. A new irrigation system was installed in the late 1980's that ended the old fashioned hand watering that was used for 70 years. A new Pro Shop and Sundown Patio was built in 1991 and the course was redesigned from a par 34 to a par 35 by adding a new green and removing one of the par 3's. Mustang Creek is one of the few public golf courses that still allow the use of personal golf carts.

From 1914 to 1987, the course was owned and operated by the Taylor Country Club. In 1987, the course was purchased by local businessmen and renamed Mustang Creek Golf Course. Since its creation all those years ago, Mustang Creek Golf Course has provided recreation to generations of Taylor and Williamson County residents.

The owners of Mustang Creek are privileged to hold a Centennial Open House to rededicate our commitment to the community.
